a minefield - most employers
will make their mind up on the
basis of an application form
or CV and a 45 minute interview.
But they may not tell the full
story.
Which is where psychometric
testing comes in; these tests
can give a very accurate insight
in to a person’s character
and are increasingly being used
by companies as part of the
recruitment process.
Newcastle-based recruitment
agency Da Silva Recruitment
has been providing clients with
an optional service of carrying
out Thomas International Personality
Profiles on behalf of clients
for the past year. Now managing
director, Sarah Da Silva has
qualified as an assessor for
Thomas International, allowing
her to carry out the tests and
produce detailed reports herself.
“What these tests can
assess is a person’s self-image,
how they currently modify their
behavior in the work environment
and their behavior under pressure.
It gives you a detailed description
of a person, very much telling
you their characteristics, highlighting
weaknesses and strengths and
maybe workplace frustrations.
“So, for example, if
you were looking to employ a
sales executive and the personality
profile showed they were failing
to meet their sales targets
it would be flagged up so you
could ask them about this -
were the targets unachievable?
Was the candidate in on setting
them? Clients have found them
really useful,” said Sarah.
However, these tests are not
just limited for use in the
recruitment process, they may
also be used as part of a company’s
appraisal system, and Da Silva
Recruitment is able to offer
this service also.
“The tests would show
how people are currently feeling
about their role, bring up difficulties
they may be having or pinpoint
training needs. We have recently
been working with several companies
and one in particular has in
excess of 30 staff and they
will be asking staff to undertake
the profiles prior to their
annual appraisals being held
in April.
“Since we began offering
the profiles as an additional
service to our normal recruitment
services, it has generated an
enormous amount of interest,
and we can design a package
to suit each client. Whether
